Dr. Virgil P. Sydenstricker World War II scrapbook, 1944-1946.

The collection consists of a scrapbook of Dr. Virgil P. Sydenstricker pertaining to his duties as a physician in the U.S. Public Health Service detailed to the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration from 1944-1946. As head of the Nutrition Section, Sydenstricker's activities involved assessing the medical and nutritional problems of European refugees, particularly survivors of the German concentration camps. The scrapbook includes correspondence, official military orders, postcards, ephemera, printed material, and numerous photographs documenting his activities in Europe.

In April 1955 the Department of HEW licensed 6 companies to distribute a newly-developed polio vaccine developed by Jonas Salk of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. The vaccine's effectiveness had been endorsed by NIH and the Surgeon General.
